Not everywhere yet. Early rollout. US users first. But the direction is clear enough.
After years of leaning on subscriptions and API revenue, OpenAI is adding a third layer: attention monetization.
That’s not surprising. The timing is.
The Cost Side Is Catching Up
If you strip everything else away, this move looks less like strategy and more like pressure.
Running large models isn’t cheap. Training gets most of the headlines, but inference is where the real bleed happens. Every prompt costs compute. Every response scales with usage.
And usage isn’t slowing down.
Unlike traditional software, you don’t get to zero marginal cost here. The meter keeps running.
Subscriptions help. Enterprise APIs help more. But neither fully absorbs the cost of millions of free users asking questions all day.
At some point, that gap shows up.
This looks like that point.
Why Ads, Why Now
The logic is familiar because we’ve seen it before.

That tells you what kind of ads this is likely to be.

The reported budget requirements—somewhere in the $50K to $100K range—also give a hint. This isn’t long-tail self-serve yet. It’s controlled, higher-quality demand.
Fewer advertisers. More data per advertiser. Easier to tune.

This Changes What ChatGPT Is
Up to now, ChatGPT has been framed as a tool.
You go there to:

It doesn’t push content at you. It responds.
Ads complicate that.

This is where regulation eventually shows up.
Early Signals From Pricing
The $50K–$100K entry point suggests something else.
Scarcity.
There isn’t unlimited inventory yet, so OpenAI can afford to be selective. That also gives it tighter control over what gets shown and how it performs.
This phase isn’t about scale. It’s about calibration.
This Probably Becomes the Default Model
If this works—even moderately—you’ll see it spread.
The structure is already forming:

- paid tier → clean experience

It’s the same three-layer model most platforms converge on.
